How It Works

How a Good business gets recommended by AI.

AI doesn't pick businesses at random. It names the ones it can read, trust, and back up with what the rest of the web says. One tactic won't get you there. We grow all five layers together, the same way a tree grows.

CheckWe find out what AI says about you today.

How do you get a business recommended by AI?

AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity recommend the businesses they understand best and can confirm from other sources. To get named, a business needs five things working together. We call it the Pine Method:

  1. Foundation: a fast site that AI crawlers can reach and understand
  2. Answers: pages that answer real customer questions up front
  3. Local trust: a complete Google Business Profile and steady reviews
  4. Reputation: mentions on trusted sites that back you up
  5. Recommended: tracking where AI names you, and closing the gaps every month

Search changed fast. Here's how fast.

  • 45%of consumers now use ChatGPT and other AI tools to find local businesses. A year earlier it was 6%.BrightLocal, 2026
  • 900M+people use ChatGPT every week.OpenAI, Feb 2026
  • 58%fewer clicks go to the top Google result when an AI Overview answers first.Ahrefs study, 2026
  • 97%of consumers read reviews before choosing a local business. AI reads them too.BrightLocal, 2026

If AI answers the question and names someone else, you never get the click. That's why being named is the new first page.

Before AI names anyone, it quietly asks three questions.

Every layer we build answers one of them. Miss one and a competitor gets the mention instead.

  1. "Who's the best remodeler near me?" Your customer asks
  2. Can I read this business? Foundation and answers
  3. Can I trust it? Local trust
  4. Do others agree? Reputation
  5. AI answer "…Evergreen Kitchen & Bath is highly rated for quality work and clear timelines."

The Pine Method: five layers, grown from the ground up.

The ground

First, we find out what AI says about you today.

We ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Google Maps the questions your customers ask. Then we write down exactly who gets named, who gets cited, and why it isn't you yet.

For exampleFor a naturopath in Edmonds, we'd ask things like "best naturopathic doctor near me" and "who does hormone testing in Edmonds," then log every practice named and every website cited.

  • Real customer questions for your services and area
  • Every answer engine your customers use
  • The competitors getting named in your place

What you getA plain-English report within 48 hours.

Layer 1 · The trunk

Foundation. AI can't recommend what it can't read.

Plenty of good businesses are invisible to AI for boring reasons. Their site blocks the AI crawlers without anyone knowing, loads slowly, or never clearly says what the business does and where. We fix the plumbing first.

For exampleWe often find a site quietly telling ChatGPT's crawler to stay out. It's usually a single line in a settings file, and nothing else on this page helps until it's fixed.

  • AI crawlers allowed in, not locked out
  • Structured data that spells out who you are, where, and what you do
  • A fast, clean site that works on every phone

What you seeYour technical fixes done in the first month.

Layer 2 · The widest branch

Answers. Be the page AI wants to quote.

AI pulls from pages that answer a question clearly and early. So we build pages around the real questions people ask about your services, with the answer up top and the proof right behind it. We also clean up thin, outdated pages, because weak pages can hold back the rest of the site.

For exampleInstead of a page that says "We do kitchen remodels," picture one titled "What a kitchen remodel costs in Charlotte" that opens with a real price range, then explains what pushes it up or down. That opening paragraph is what AI quotes.

  • Service and location pages that answer first
  • Questions and answers in your customers' own words
  • Every page earning its place on the site

What you seeNew and improved pages every month, approved by you.

Layer 3 · The middle branch

Local trust. Prove you're real, close, and good at this.

AI tools and Google Maps lean hard on local signals. A complete Google Business Profile, steady fresh reviews, and the same name, address and phone everywhere you're listed all tell it you're the safe bet nearby.

For exampleIf your Google profile says "Suite 200," Yelp says "Ste. 2," and your website still lists an old phone number, AI sees three slightly different businesses. We make them one.

  • Google Business Profile built out completely
  • A simple system that keeps new reviews coming
  • Consistent listings across the directories that matter

What you seeYour Maps ranking tracked, aiming for the top three.

Layer 4 · The top branch

Reputation. AI believes what others say about you.

Your own website can only vouch for you so much. AI looks for your name in places it already trusts: industry sites, local news, associations, and partners. The more often trusted sources mention you, the more confidently AI recommends you.

For exampleA write-up in a local business journal, a spot on your trade association's member page, or a mention on a supplier's list of trusted installers. Each one is someone else vouching for you.

  • Mentions on trusted industry and local sites
  • Partner and association listings
  • Your story told the same way everywhere

What you seeA running list of where you've been mentioned.

The crown

Recommended. When every layer lines up, AI names you.

This is the payoff. When someone asks for a business like yours, AI understands what you do, trusts you're the real deal, and sees other sites agree. So it says your name, and the call comes to you instead of the competitor down the road.

For exampleYour report card might show you're named for "best kitchen remodeler near me" while a competitor still wins "bathroom remodel cost." So next month's work goes after that question.

  • Named in AI answers for your key questions
  • Cited as a source, with a link back to you
  • Found on Google Maps and regular search too

What you seeA monthly report card showing where you're named.

How to check what AI says about your business in five minutes.

You don't need us for a first look. Here's the same quick test we start with. Grab a notepad.

  1. Use a private window. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google logged out or in incognito, so your own history doesn't color the answers.
  2. Ask like a customer, not like the owner. Type "Who's the best [your service] in [your city]?" Don't type your business name. Your customers won't.
  3. Ask why. Follow up with "Why did you pick them?" and "What sources did you use?" ChatGPT search and Perplexity will show the websites they leaned on.
  4. Write it all down. Every business named and every site cited. Those cited sites are exactly where your reputation work should start.
  5. Try three or four questions. One answer is a snapshot, not a verdict. Ask about prices, specific services and nearby towns too.

Reviewed every month

Google and AI search keep changing. We keep up so you don't have to.

Google updates its ranking systems several times a year, and AI search changes even faster. We track every shift and adjust your plan in the next monthly cycle, so your tree keeps growing instead of falling behind.

  1. AI answers now sit above the links

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode answer the question on the results page, so fewer people click through. Being the business that's quoted matters more than being link number one.

    Answers · Recommended
  2. Real experience beats generic content

Google's core updates keep rewarding helpful, people-first pages written from real experience, and keep pushing thin or copied pages down.

  3. AI checks your facts across the web

AI assistants compare your name, services, and details across your site, your Google profile, directories, and other sites. When they match, AI is more confident naming you.

    Local trust · Reputation
  4. Reviews get summarized, not just counted

Google and AI tools now write summaries of your reviews, and 82% of consumers read them. What customers say about you, in detail, shapes how AI describes you.

    Local trust
  5. AI search engines send their own crawlers

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others crawl the web to find sources to cite. A site that blocks them, often by accident, simply can't be quoted.

Every market moves at its own pace. This is the order things happen in.

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

ChatGPT and similar tools recommend businesses they can find, understand and confirm elsewhere. Make sure AI crawlers can reach your site, publish pages that answer your customers' questions directly, keep your Google Business Profile complete with steady reviews, and earn mentions on trusted sites. Those are the five layers of our Pine Method.

Why isn't my business showing up in ChatGPT?

It's usually one of four things. Your site blocks AI crawlers without you knowing. Your pages don't clearly say what you do and where. Your Google profile and reviews are thin. Or very few other websites mention you. Most businesses we check have at least two of these.

Is getting cited by AI different from SEO?

They share the same foundation, so you need both. The difference is that AI rewards being easy to quote and easy to confirm across the web, not only ranking for a keyword. A business can rank on Google and still never get named in an AI answer.

Should I block AI crawlers on my website?

Not if you want to be recommended. Search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT) and PerplexityBot are how those tools find sources to cite, so blocking them takes you out of the running. If you'd rather your content not train AI models, you can block training crawlers like GPTBot and still allow the search ones.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI answers?

Yes, a lot. Google's own AI Overviews, AI Mode and Maps lean on its local business data, and other AI tools pull from review sites and directories that echo the same details. A complete, accurate profile with fresh reviews helps everywhere.

How many reviews do I need to show up in AI answers?

There's no magic number. Steady new reviews, recent ones, and reviews that mention specific services and places matter more than a big total that stopped growing two years ago.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It's a proposed standard, not a requirement. Google has said it doesn't use it, and no major AI search tool has confirmed it affects who gets recommended. It doesn't hurt to have one, but it's nowhere near the top of the list.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

It depends on your market and your competition. Foundation fixes usually happen in the first month, and AI answers typically start to shift after a few months of steady work. Anyone promising overnight results is guessing.

Can anyone guarantee AI will name my business?

No. Nobody controls what AI says, and answers change. What we can do is make your business the easiest one to understand and confirm, then show you every month exactly where you're named and where a competitor still is.

Which AI tools do you track?

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, and Google Maps, using the questions your customers actually ask.

How much does it cost?

Most partners invest between $750 and $3,995 a month, depending on business size, industry, competition and market. About 30% land between $750 and $1,500, 45% between $1,500 and $2,500, and 25% between $2,500 and $3,995. It's month to month, and our Good Pricing page shows exactly what moves the number.
